Jott

"Jott™ is a revolutionary new service that automatically converts your voice into e-mail and text messages — anytime, anywhere, with any cell phone."

Jott's fabulous Jott Links service allows you to call in reminders, appointments, to-dos, contacts, notes — even look things up — right from your phone using just your voice.

We urge you to practice safe and considerate jotting: Loud, enunciated "Sandy"s won't be appreciated on the train. And please be careful when jotting and driving — put 1-866-JOTT-123 on speed-dial and use a headset.

Jotting to Sandy

How do I Jott to Sandy?

Call 1-866-JOTT-123. When asked "Who do you want to Jott" say "Sandy" and let Sandy know what to remember for you or remind you about.

Do I have to say anything special?

Jotting to Sandy works the same way as sending her email. Start a sentence with "remember" or "remind" and she'll remember it for you. Mention a date or time and she'll set a reminder.

The only exception is tagging: obviously "@todo" is a little hard to pronounce. To tag items you're jotting, just say:

tag with [tag name]

For example:

"remind me to call Hazel tomorrow tag with phone"

"remember Jim Broadstreet's number is 503-555-1212 tag with friends and bookclub"

Do you have any suggestions for successful Sandy jotting?

As with any successful presentation or fruitful conversation:

  • Speak clearly — jotting while eating go about as well together as, well, talking while eating.
  • Speak slowly — not so slowly that you put yourself to sleep, but slower than you would usually on a telephone conversation.
  • Speak evenly — dramatic pauses are likely to suggest that you're done jotting.
  • Jott from a quiet environment if at all possible as background noise — car horns, talk radio, cappuccino frothing, vacuuming, and killer Guitar Hero III make for iffy transcription.
  • Wait until Jott tells you, "got it!" before you hang up.

Sandy expects the same hints on the phone as she does by email:

  • Start a sentence with "remember" or "remind" to have her remember something for you.
  • Mention a date or time — "tomorrow", "November 21st", "at 9:35pm" — to have her create an appointment or set a reminder.

How accurate are the messages Sandy receives from Jott?

Generally Jott does a great job of transcribing what you say and Sandy just reads what Jott passed her way. So the clearer you are on the phone, the more accurate this game of virtual telephone is.

(Sandy currently accepts jotts of any transcription confidence level — this will likely be tweaked as we go along.)

Will Sandy reply to my jott?

Sandy replies to jotts just like she does to email — albeit abbreviated since Jott relays her replies back to your mobile phone via SMS/tet message.

It is up to you whether you'd like Jott to relay her reply back to your phone. To toggle these replies on or off, visit your list of Jott Links on jott.com, click the "Edit" link next to your Sandy Jott Link, check or uncheck the "SMS Response" checkbox, and click the "Save" button.

Will Sandy also send her usual email reply?

Yes, Sandy will also send her usual email reply in response to a jott message if you have email replies turned on in Sandy's email settings.

Will Jott also email my jotts to me?

Yes, Jott will email you a transcribed version of each of your jotts to Sandy along with links to the audio version so that you can listen to it at your leisure.

No. We'll never share your account information with anyone without your explicit consent.

How does Sandy know a jott is from me?

You link your Jott account with your Sandy account through a "Jott Link". You can think of it as a special key. Jott shares this key with Sandy when you add Sandy to your list of Jott Links. Then when you jott something, Jott includes the key as a password of sorts to let Sandy know it's coming from you.

How do I ask Sandy to stop accepting incoming jotts?

Visit your Jott settings, click the "No" radio button to stop accepting incoming jotts, and the "Save" button to save your settings.
